Asphyxia can be the result of an accident traumatic birth, drugs or drowning and can result in severe disabilities including cerebral palsy, seizures, and intellectual disabilities. Vision and hearing can be impacted depending on the extent of the brain damage and is most likely to occur when asphyxia occurs during pregnancy or birth.
