Ensuring Access to One's Community Using an SSP

Participants completing this course will learn effective strategies to advocate for an SSP and/or an SSP program in their home community.

Additional topics discussed in this course include; the role of the SSP  and the consumer, the various types of SSPs, funding options for SSP programs and tips on how to plan and Implement an SSP program in your home area.

Learners completing this course will be able to:

1.    Describe the role of the Support Service Provider (SSP).

2.    Describe the role of the consumer when working with an SSP.

3.    Explain how the role of an SSP differs from the role of an interpreter.

4.    List and describe the accommodations they may require to ensure full access and participation.

5.    Explain how the role of the consumer differs when working with a personal SSP verses working with an SSP provided by an official SSP program.

6.    List and describe strategies for recruiting, training & maintaining a personal SSP.

7.    Explain how one would learn what, if any, local SSP services are available in their area.

8.    Explain the state regulations that provide for SSP services and how one would advocate for such laws if you live in a state that does not have such regulations.
